Code compliance repairs, done to the letter by Peak Property Electric

The National Electrical Code (NEC) is not red tape. It is a set of rules written in response to real fires, real injuries, and real deaths, and it is updated every three years as we learn more. When a home is wired to code, it is wired to the safest standard we know. Peak Property Electric corrects code violations across Skokie and the North Shore, from a single flagged outlet to a full-house correction after a failed inspection.

Every rule in the code was written because someone, somewhere, got hurt without it.

Why following the code matters

Insurance companies, mortgage lenders, and municipal inspectors all rely on the code as the baseline for a safe home. Wiring that violates it can void a homeowner's policy, kill a home sale, and, most importantly, start a fire. Grounding, GFCI and AFCI protection, proper wire sizing, tamper-resistant outlets, and correct panel work are not optional extras, they are the difference between a system that fails safely and one that fails dangerously.

A short history of the electrical code

The first National Electrical Code was published in 1897, stitched together from five competing sets of rules as cities wired up for electric light and buildings started burning down from bad connections. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) took over the code in 1911 and has revised it on a three-year cycle ever since. Milestones tell the story of what we learned the hard way: required equipment grounding spread through the 1950s and 60s, ground-fault protection (GFCI) arrived in the 1970s after hundreds of electrocutions a year, arc-fault protection (AFCI) was added around 2000 to catch the arcing faults that start fires inside walls, and tamper-resistant outlets became required in 2008 to protect children. Each edition closes a gap that cost people their homes or their lives.

Common violations we correct

Questions

What homeowners ask us

How do I know if my home has code violations?
A whole-house safety inspection is the surest way. Common red flags are two-prong outlets, a fuse box or an old panel, no GFCI outlets near water, and warm or discolored devices. We can inspect and give you a clear, prioritized list.
Do I have to bring my whole house up to current code?
Not usually. Existing work that was legal when installed is often allowed to remain, but anything you newly touch or that is actively unsafe must meet current code. We will tell you exactly what is required versus recommended.
Will you handle the permit and inspection?
Yes. We pull the proper permits in your municipality and coordinate the inspection so the correction is documented and official, which matters for insurance and home sales.
