Where CO comes from
Carbon monoxide is produced any time fuel burns, gas furnaces and water heaters, stoves, fireplaces, and vehicles. A cracked heat exchanger, a blocked flue, or a car left running in an attached garage can push CO into living spaces. Illinois law requires carbon monoxide alarms within 15 feet of every sleeping area in homes with a fuel-burning appliance or attached garage, and it's one of the smartest protections you can add.
