Home  /  Childproof outlets.

Childproof outlets.

Roughly seven children a day are hurt by electrical outlets in the U.S. Tamper-resistant outlets block objects from going in, no flimsy plastic caps required.

To a curious toddler, an outlet is exactly the right height and exactly the right shape to poke something into. Every year in the United States, thousands of children are treated for outlet-related injuries, and the old plastic plug-in caps are a poor defense, they're a choking hazard themselves and kids learn to pull them out. Peak Property Electric installs tamper-resistant outlets across the North Shore, the real fix.

Plastic caps come out. Tamper-resistant outlets don't have to be remembered at all.

How tamper-resistant outlets work

A tamper-resistant receptacle has spring-loaded shutters behind the slots. They only open when equal pressure is applied to both sides at once, exactly what a plug does, and exactly what a single object like a hairpin or key cannot. There's nothing to install, remember, or lose, and the outlet looks and works normally for adults. Because they're so effective, they've been required by code in the living areas of new and renovated homes since 2008.

What we do

Questions

What homeowners ask us

Aren't the plastic outlet caps good enough?
Not really. Kids learn to remove them, they're a choking hazard, and they only work if someone remembers to put them back. Tamper-resistant outlets protect automatically, with nothing to remember.
Do tamper-resistant outlets work normally for adults?
Yes. They look and function like any outlet, a plug goes in the same way. The shutters only block single objects poked into one slot.
Should I replace every outlet in the house?
We usually prioritize kids' rooms, playrooms, and main living areas first. Since 2008 these outlets are required in new work, and it's an easy, affordable upgrade to make room by room.
